Day of Pentecost Worship

May 23, 2021

An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Westminster John Knox Press, 2018, p. 344):

“Pentecost” comes from a Greek word meaning fiftieth day. On this day, the Holy Spirit came with wind and flame, empowering the disciples to proclaim the good news of the risen Lord to all people. Falling on the fiftieth day of the season of Easter, Pentecost represents the culmination of the church’s seven week celebration of Christ’s resurrection. As the Lord’s Day is sometimes called the “eighth” day of creation, Pentecost is a day of new creation- all things transformed and made new by the Word and Breath of the living God. On the day of Pentecost we give particular thanks for the gift of God’s Holy Spirit, who gathers the church as the body of Christ and sends us to share in Christ’s mission throughout the world.

At the May 15, 2021 Presbytery Stated Meeting, one of the Special Orders of the Day was Worship.  The Worship Service was planned by the Worship Committee.  The service included Call to Worship by Rev. Adam Fischer and Prayer of Confession by Rev. Meg Flannagan.  This was a great opportunity for members of the presbytery to participate in worship with two of our newer pastors, Adam and Meg, Co-Pastors of St. Giles.

Scripture echo reading was provided by Christie Gravely, Ginna Lister, and Robert Norris from the Easley Church.  Scripture echo reading invites those in worship to live in the word.  By repeating phrases from the scripture, scripture echo readings allow God’s word to fill our hearts and minds.

Music selections featured Presbyterian College Women’s Choir and John Know Choir.  The two hymns included in the service are “Come, O Holy Spirit, Come” and “Breathe on Me, Breath of God.”

Children and Youth from First Anderson, Mark Smith (Eastminster), Lucie Svatanova-Hughes (Eastminster), Sylvia Woodall (Central) and Sarah Coffman provided a unique presentation of the Lord’s prayer in many languages.

The Worship Committee members include Holt Andrews (Chair), Mandy Davis, Allyson Helvie, Beverly Kelly, Cynthia Sims, Chad Wright-Pittman, and Pressley Cox (Associate for Shared Mission and Ministry).

The Pentecost Worship Service is available on the Foothills Presbytery YouTube site.  Please share with your congregations.
