News from Ghana

The Foothills Presbytery delegation to Ghana has returned after an exciting trip, and they are anxious to share their experience with churches in the presbytery. If you would like to have one of these people visit your congregation to tell of their journey, please contact them and schedule a time. They are Susan Barrow, Margaret Menz, and Jeff Randall.

beads
The women in Ghana make jewelry from beads and send it over to the U.S. to be sold. The jewelry is very pretty and unique and is priced very reasonably. The money from the bead jewelry is sent back to Ghana and is used by the women there for necessities and to enable them to keep up their business. If you would like to have some of this jewelry to sell in your church (maybe for a Christmas alternative gift giving fair), please  email Nita Reiter or call her at 864-246-7750.
For Children and Youth

Presbyterians Today will feature a young person in each issue, beginning in January. They are looking for active Presbyterians between the ages of 12 and 21 who are willing to share their thoughts and opinions with the rest of the church. For more information, go to www.pcusa.org/today.

joy
The children in our congregations are invited to help create art for the Christmas Joy Offering for next year. This is a wonderful opportunity for a child from 2 to 14 years of age to express his or her vision of the Christmas story. Entries must be received by January 30, 2009. See more online. (Pictured is artwork for 2008)

Freedom of Religion at Risk

Is evolving civil law eroding constitutional protection of religious freedom under the First Amendment? Is our historically rooted Presbyterian system of church governance at risk when courts interfere with presbyteries exercising their ecclesiastical obligations under our Book of Order? You are invited to explore these and related issues at a live and interactive on-line convocation, organized by Pittsburgh Presbytery on Thursday, February 19, 2009 from 2:00-5:30 p.m., EST. More information online.
 FOG Revision

A Think and Study Group, authorized by Foothills Presbytery Unity Team, has been organized to study the Form of Government Revision. The meetings of this group are open to all interested parties. The next meeting is set for December 4 at 12:00 noon at Nazareth Presbyterian Church, 680 Nazareth Church Rd., Moore, S.C. To read documents related to the revision of the Form of Government, visit the Foothills Presbytery website.
PDA Still Needs

ike
Hurricane Ike has been described as one of the worst storms in U.S. history - the third most destructive to hit the U.S. The hurricane left widespread destruction from the Caribbean to Texas, Louisiana and other areas of the U.S. Damage in the Houston area alone has been estimated at $8.9 billion dollars. Most of Galveston washed away. The town of Bridge City - population 8,000 - was 97 per cent destroyed. People are still without power and water, and some temporary housing shelters - opened immediately after the storm - are now being closed. Yet, Hurricane Ike and its devastating aftermath have faded from national news, as economic news and the election fill front pages and TV broadcasts.

The New York Times recently featured an ad for the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) in a special section on charitable giving. The ad is intended to raise the awareness of this ministry, and to give thanks to those who have given of their time and treasure. The need for recovery as a result of the 2008 storms is still great. Long-time recovery efforts could cost as much as $7.5 million.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance needs our help to replenish funds to respond to these communities and to continue to respond to floods and other disasters. Please donate and encourage others within your congregation to also contribute. Donations can be given online at http://www.pcusa.org/pda. This site also has stories from the affected areas, a short video, bulletin inserts and other resources to help spread the word.
