Presbytery Executives Write Pastoral Letter
The executives of the five South Carolina presbyteries wrote a joint letter to all members of PC(USA) churches in South Carolina informing them of actions taken by the 218th General Assembly in San Jose, California. The two actions addressed in the letter are:
*Approval of an overture, which parallels the action of the 217th General Assembly in the adoption of the Task Force Report on Peace, Unity and Purity, "allowing each session or presbytery to ask candidates for ordination and/or installation to declare whether or not they can comply with the standards of the church." It applies to all standards of the church.
* Approval of an overture, which sends a proposed amendment to the Book of Order which, if approved by a majority of presbyteries, will remove "in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, or chastity in singleness" from G-6.0106b. The proposed new G-6.0106b states: "Those who are called to ordained service in the church, by their assent to the constitutional questions for ordination and installation (W-4.4003), pledge themselves to live lives obedient to Jesus Christ the Head of the Church, striving to follow where he leads through the witness of the Scriptures, and to understand the Scriptures through the instruction of the Confessions. In so doing, they declare their fidelity to the standards of the church. Each governing body charged with examination for ordination and/or installation (G-14.0240 and G-14.0450) establishes the candidate's sincere efforts to adhere to these standards."
The letter reminds constituents that presbyteries will have opportunities in the future to vote on proposed changes in the constitution. It also emphasizes that "unless a majority of presbyteries approves the amendment, the ordination standards that include fidelity in marriage and chastity in singleness will remain in the Book of Order."
