Instead you might want to join us at the location of the new FaithPoint Presbyterian Church in West Simpsonville, 1713 W. Georgia Road, and participate in a workday there - getting their property ready for Bible School at the end of the month and worship services soon to be held in the house on the property. The office will re-open on Monday, June 22.

The Write Stuff: Crafting Sermons that Capture and Convince
Veteren preacher Sondra Willobee shows preachers how to enliven their sermons by using the techniques of great writers. The book includes three sections: (1) "hook" - how good sermons begin with something that grabs listeners' attention; (2) "book" - how to shape a sermon with narrative pulse and ascending emotional intensity so that listeners experience the gospel; and (3) "stone" - how good sermons use specific, concrete language. By explaining these techniques, offering many examples, and reflecting on her own successes and failures, Willobee has provided a resource that will rekindle the creativity of experienced preachers and help new preachers develop their own compelling voice --Publisher's website.

New President at Columbia Theological Seminary

hayner
The Board of Trustees of Columbia Theological Seminary voted unanimously on June 15 to appoint the Rev. Stephen A. Hayner as the school's ninth president, following a nationwide search.

Hayner, who came to the  seminary in 2003 as associate professor of evangelism and church growth, succeeds Laura S. Mendenhall, who has served Columbia since 2000. His appointment is effective July 1, 2009.

In a press release from the seminary, William E. Scheu, chair of Columbia's Board of Trustees, said "God has called a person of integrity, vision and joy to this office. The trustees are grateful for the search committee's expansive and diligent process that led them to discern God's call and recommend Steve to the Board."
